Jean René Jerome was born on March 17, 1942 in Petit-Goâve. He is considered one of Haiti’s greatest artists. His family belongs to the elite of Haitian society, a position that enabled him to become an actor, singer, and a dancer. He studied drawing and painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1965, he won first prize at the Esso Salon Competition. Jerome is reputed for the originality of his paintings, particularly those of nude females. He was awarded an art scholarship by the American government in 1970. He returned to Haiti in 1973 and taught at the School of Fine Arts in Port-Au-Prince. Jerome artwork has been exhibited in Canada, Brazil, Latin America, Senegal, Martinique, Santo Domingo and the Brooklyn Museum in New York. Jerome’s career was cut short by his sudden death in 1991. Illustrations of his painting can be seen in Selden Rodman's book “Where Art is Joy”, Eva Pataki's book, “Haitian Painting” and Gerard Alexis’ book, “Peintres Haïtiens”.
Painting Description:
“This is the work of a true master! The painting captures a scene in Haiti, at the border of La Riviére Froid. It depicts several boats preparing to set sail. One of Jerome's magical skills is the use of color to create a unique marriage of light and water. This is a true onlookers view of this picturesque scene through squinted eyes, from the glare of light. The painting is fully guaranteed to be original work of the artist.red.”
