Jean Baptiste Bottex was born in 1918 in Port-Margot in the north of Haiti. He worked as a wood sculptor to support his brothers and sisters. He is the older brother of the listed artist Seymour Bottex. Jean was a self-taught primitive artist who was praised for his draftsman like primitive paintings. He was greatly inspired by the renowned artist Michelet Giordani. His artwork has been exhibited locally and the United States. Illustrations of his painting can be seen in John Allen Franciscus’ book, “Haiti Voodoo Kingdom To Modern Riviera”. He died on May 1979 in New York.

“This painting is typical Haitian market scene. It was painted by the well known Haitian artist Jean Baptiste Bottex. It depicts a peasant woman selling beans. Haitian daily life consist of going to the market to buy or sale. Painting is framed with a wooden hand frame. It is signed and dated 1975 by the artist on the lower right corner. The authenticity of the painting is guaranteed.”
