Bottex Jean Baptiste

Jean Baptiste Bottex was born in 1918 in Port-Margot in the north of Haiti. He worked as a wood sculptor to support his brothers and sisters. He is the older brother of the listed artist Seymour Bottex. Jean was a self-taught primitive artist who was praised for his draftsman like primitive paintings. He was greatly inspired by the renowned artist Michelet Giordani. His artwork has been exhibited locally and the United States. Illustrations of his painting can be seen in John Allen Franciscus’ book, “Haiti Voodoo Kingdom To Modern Riviera”. He died on May 1979 in New York.

About the work

Painting Description:

“ The painting has successfully captured the vibrancy of colors of a typical Haitian market scene. It depicts a merchant setting up her display of fruits for sale. A peasant may set up a mini-market at any place or time once the produce become available and the need for money or other goods arise.”
