About the work

Painting Description:

“This painting is a masterpiece of the legendary Haitian artist, Decourcelle Gourgue. It depicts a young peasant woman making preparation for voodoo ceremony. The ritual is being performed around a sacred tree. There is also a ritual bottle, several crosses and an fruit on a plate representing the united spirits. The dark red color scheme, isolated setting and the sacred all combine to convey this spiritual experience. The subtle color is typical of his earlier style.”
