David Rouzier was born on October 10, 1934 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In 1949, he was encouraged by his close friend, Andre Normil to join the Centre d’Art. He later left the Centre d’Art to become a member of the Foyer des Arts Plastiques, which was formed by those sophisticated artists who were dissatisfied with the way issues facing Haitian artists were addressed. Rouzier worked very closely with Rene Exume and Emanuel Jolicoeur. In his artwork, Rouzier uses a clear strong palette that allows him to add great depth to his paintings of peasants in country landscapes and voodoo scenes. His paintings are included in the permanent collections of the Waterloo Museum of Art in Iowa.
Painting Description:
Voodoo ceremony is one of David Rouzier's finest achievements. In the forest of Jacmel, a voodoo ritual is in progress. The ritual is performed around a sacred tree. A scull emerging from the middle of the tree serves as a messenger of the gods. The voodoo priest, holding a machete, is sprinkling blood as a symbol of purity. There is also a ritual bottle, several crosses and an egg on a plate representing the united spirits. The dark color scheme, isolated setting and the sacred all combine to convey this spiritual experience.
